On Thursday, April 15th, alumni, parents, and friends enjoyed a virtual conversation with President Jim Ryan (LAW ’92) and Dr. Arun Majumdar on “The Economy and Carbon Emissions”. We enjoyed learning about technological developments, efforts to mitigate climate change, and what we need to do to achieve an equitable carbon-free economy.

He recently was the Chair of President Biden’s transition team for the Department of Energy. He previously served the Obama administration as the Founding Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E), the Acting Under Secretary of Energy, and as Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Energy. Before joining Stanford, he was the Vice President for Energy at Google. Mr. Majumdar is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, US National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Welcome remarks were provided by Liz Magill (LAW ’95, PAR ’23), Executive Vice President and Provost, University of Virginia, David and Mary Harrison Distinguished Professor of Law, and Karen McGlathery, Professor of Environmental Sciences, Director of UVA’s Environmental Resilience Institute, and Director of the Virginia Coast Reserve Long Term Ecological Research program.
