On April 16th, the UVA Club of Vermont hosted a virtual program with Dr. William Petri (GSAS ’80, MED ’82, ’88). Dr. Petri, who studies immunology, outlined his research on the history of polio around the world. Like COVID-19, polio brought fear and illness to many but was eventually stemmed by vaccinations. Dr. Petri compared this trajectory to what we’re experiencing now as we await a vaccine for COVID-19. Dr. Petri has both his MD and PhD from UVA, and the session was moderated by UVA alum Rachel Stadler (Biomedical Engineering ’16), an UVM doctoral student and an active participant of the UVA Club of Vermont.
William A. Petri, Jr., M.D., Ph.D. is the Wade Hampton Frost Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair for Research of the Department of Medicine, and Professor of Medicine, Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology, and Pathology.
