Greetings from the Board
Thank you for your enthusiastic support last year! Your participation and enjoyment of our various Club events was greatly appreciated. Because of you, it was another memorable year!
In order to maintain valued Club traditions, the Board asks you to consider making a voluntary, fully tax deductible donation this year to help offset our overhead expenses not covered by UVA’s Office of Engagement. Enclosed you will find an Annual Membership Donation form for this purpose. Be assured that 100% of your donation will go to fund vital Club functions such as: postage and printing of invitations and newsletters, speakers’ gifts and expenses, annual Jefferson Book Awards to local high school scholars and community-based service projects.
Here’s a brief run-down of events that took place during the summer … Three high school scholars from Vero Beach, Indian River Charter and St. Edward’s were recognized by the Jefferson Book Awards program. UVA-bound students from Vero Beach and Stuart each received a warm send-off. Orthopedic surgeon Peter Wernicki (Col ‘80) received the 2015 Paragon Award in June for his global leadership in aquatic medicine, water safety and drowning prevention from the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Michele Sternberg (Col ‘94 ), St. Edward’s Director of College Counseling, and her family marked a second, rewarding year hosting a Chinese high school exchange student now thriving at a university in the U.S. Overcoming many obstacles, the UVA Baseball Team won its first College World Series title by defeating Vanderbilt in an exciting game three of the final series.
You will be receiving email about the November 7th Virginia v. Miami football game to be held at Dolphin’s stadium. Florida Wahoo clubs are joining together to arrange for discounted tickets, a pre-game party, etc. If you have questions, please contact Susan McGarry.
After discussing last year’s events, the Board has lined up a new mix of social and learning opportunities. Again this year, planned activities (see schedule below) will offer University alumni, family and friends new chances to re-connect with old friends and to meet new people who also share a connection to the University. Watch for more information and reminders beginning in December.
2016 Events Schedule
Friday, January 15 Annual Season Opening Cocktail Party Chez Fritts
A popular tradition continues! 910 Ladybug Lane, Vero Beach, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Consummate hosts Guy and Phyllis are legendary for fabulous gatherings. Catch up with old friends and make new ones! Contributions are suggested to help offset the cost of bountiful refreshments.
Wed., February 24 Presentation by Distinguished History Professor Peter S. Onuf
Dr. Onuf, Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor Emeritus, will speak at 2:00 p.m. as part of the annual Distinguished Professor Lecture Series held at the Vero Beach Museum of Art auditorium. He will explore the correspondence between aging patriots Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. Their reflections on time, history and the American Revolution offer fascinating insights into their times and ours. He is also a highly entertaining co-host of public radio’s “Backstory with the American History Guys.”
Tuesday, March 15 Lunch and Learn: Historic Dodgertown Then and Now
Join us at C.J. Cannon’s Restaurant in Vero Beach for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Enjoy photos and favorite stories presented by author and alumnus Rody Johnson (Eng ’56). Brady Ballard, V.P. of Historic Dodgertown, will discuss the new life of this cultural landmark.
April (date TBA) Celebrate Spring and Thomas Jefferson’s Birthday
Farewell cocktail party to toast friendships and fun had this season with fellow Wahoos and to salute Mr. Jefferson. Details are forthcoming.
Hopefully you are already looking forward to joining us at one or more of these events. Watch for postcard invitations and reminders via email. It is critical that your contact info is current! Please notify us of any updates to your email address, postal address (both permanent and seasonal) and phone numbers.
Kindly RSVP to invitations when requested so we are prepared with ample refreshments, nametags, seating, etc. Please note that guests, family or friends-of-friends are always welcome!
If you have enjoyed our Club activities in the past, please consider lending a hand! There are a variety of easy ways you can help: share your ideas, volunteer to host an event, serve on the Board or behind-the-scenes (mailings, data base, website), or help strengthen the Club’s role in community service, the Jefferson Book Awards program and admissions outreach.
Did you know that our Club territory extends from Merritt Island south to Stuart? About one-third of our Treasure Coast group is located in Vero Beach with the second largest concentration in Melbourne and Stuart (ten percent each). If you are interested in organizing an event closer to home, please let us hear from you. We are here to help!
For your convenience, our Club of the Treasure Coast webpage offers event and general information 24/7. Go to: www.uvaclubs.virginia.edu, then look for the Find Your Club box (upper left), enter FL and select Club of the Treasure Coast.
As always, your thoughts, ideas and suggestions are welcome! This includes new things we might try or improvements to what we have been doing. Be sure to let us know of others with UVA ties who might like to join us, so they will receive personalized invitations. Please feel free to contact your Board members regarding any Club matter.
