Cindy Garver
Director, Alumni Services
Cindy (Col '80, UNC '84 – M.B.A.) is the Director of the U.Va. Alumni Association's Alumni Services/Admission Liaison Program for legacy applicants and has been directing the legacy liaison office for 16 years. The University has always embraced the legacy tradition. Legacies typically make up 10 to 13 percent of a class, but the increasingly competitive landscape means that alumni shouldn't assume that their child has a significant advantage in the application process. Cindy provides a yardstick for prospective students, reviewing the previous year's pool for insight into the profile of the successful candidate. This year, she counseled over 800 seniors and their families. An increasing number of younger students also book appointments; this past year, for instance, she worked with 265 juniors, 70 sophomores, and another 25 freshman. She also fields questions about curriculum from parents whose children are in middle school which is a sensible concern, considering the fact that schools are tracking students at a younger age. Cindy is also responsible for maintaining a close working relationship with the Undergraduate Admission Office.
Prior to joining the Alumni Association in 1992, Cindy worked in a variety of sales positions with technology training companies. While attending U.Va., Ms. Garver was a member of the Madison House Service Organization and Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Ms. Garver resides in Charlottesville with her husband, Rob (a 1984 Engineering School alumnus), their son and daughter, and two mixed- breed "Love Hounds".
