Office of Student Affairs
Office of Student Affairs—Expansion and Improvement of Club Sports: $25–$2,500
There are 65 club sports available at the University for students interested in incorporating physical exercise and the camaraderie of a sports team into their academic lives. But the resources available to many of these programs are limited. The Office of Student Affairs welcomes unrestricted gifts to support club sports in general. Or, donors may earmark gifts for specific programs. Gifts of any size are welcome.
Office of Student Affairs—Preservation and Enhancement of Student Green Space: $25–$2,500
There are numerous plans under development to preserve and enhance the open and green spaces that make the University of Virginia a special place and enrich the student experience. Examples of opportunities to contribute in this area include: a named bench in residence areas, green plantings and seating areas on Clemons Library Terrace, and a memorial to students who have passed away while enrolled at U.Va.
Office of Student Affairs—Student-Initiated Research Projects: $5,000
Since 2000, a gift given by the late David A. Harrison III, a retired investment banker and alumnus, has helped to fund innovative research projects by outstanding undergraduate students in a variety of disciplines. But there is always more interest among motivated students than available funding. A gift of $5,000 to the Office of Student Affairs will support an additional student research project.
Office of Student Affairs—Student Leadership Training Program: $6,500
The Office of Student Affairs runs a training program every summer for incoming student leaders. The program, vital to successful student self-governance, introduces students to administrators who can serve as resources, provides networking opportunities, ensures that student leaders understand their new institutional responsibilities, and helps them plan for the year ahead. This program serves 50 student leaders from across Grounds every year. A gift of $6,500 will support one student leader in this program.
Office of Student Affairs—Student Life and Leadership Fund: $25–$1,000
This fund provides support for student government, student organizations, career services, and student health through the Office of Student Affairs.
Office of Student Affairs—Summer Internship at a Nonprofit: $6,500
Internships can be powerful influences on students' lives and career choices, providing them with valuable hands-on experience and the references they will need later as they look for jobs. Yet, many nonprofit organizations—those in the public or social service sectors, or in the arts—often do not have funds available to pay interns, making such internships feasible only for students from affluent families. A gift of $6,500 to the Office of Student Affairs will enable a student from a low-income or middle-income family to participate in a paid summer internship at a nonprofit organization.
Women's Center
Women's Center—Iris Magazine: $5,000
Published by the Women's Center, Iris is now out in a new format. Offering a "big sister" bridge from the University to professional life, the magazine will be sent to students and alumnae as they begin their professional careers. A gift of $5,000 will provide support for the magazine.
Women's Center—Student-Faculty Dinner: $2,500
The Women's Center provides several mentoring events each year. One of the most popular is the student-faculty dinner. After dinner and conversation with students at their tables, four professors give brief presentations about how and why they chose their careers and take questions from the audience. A gift of $2,500 will support this annual dinner.
