Conferences
School of Engineering and Applied Science—Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing: $500–$1,000
The annual Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference provides a rare opportunity for women to be in a computing setting where women are in the majority. The conference offers role models and networking to women in the only major technical discipline where their representation is declining. Funds will cover the cost of travel, meals, lodging, and event registration, approximately $500 to $1,000 per student.
Guest Lecturers/Visiting Professors
Center for Children, Families, and the Law—Visiting Speakers: $2,000
Special speakers are an excellent way to engage students. Gifts will help pay for guest speakers' honoraria and travel expenses.
College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences—Special Lectures Fund: $500–$2,000
Support from the Special Lectures Fund makes it possible to present speakers that departments cannot sponsor on their own. Gifts to the Special Lectures Fund will help cover travel expenses and honoraria for guest speakers, as well as rental of lecture space and reception costs.
McIntire Department of Music—Eleanor Shea Visiting Musicians Fund: $1,000–$2,000
When major musical artists perform in Charlottesville, they often hold master classes, which bring them into personal contact with U.Va. music students and the broader community. Master classes are very popular with students, faculty, and community members. A $2,000 gift or $1,000 matched with funds from the music department will cover an artist's honorarium and other attendant costs.
Seminars
Center for Children, Families, and the Law—Career Day for Undergraduates: $1,000
Many undergraduates have shown an interest in careers related to children and families, but organizations in these fields are not often featured in college career events. Hosting a career fair will enable the center to bring in professionals—such as pediatricians, family lawyers, psychologists, social workers, and others—to talk about their jobs and discuss career opportunities. Funding will make it possible to offer speakers a small honorarium, secure a place to hold the event, and offer refreshments.
Studies in Women and Gender—Celebrating Alumnae: $25–$2,500
The Studies in Women and Gender plans to celebrate its alumnae, bringing them together with current students for talks, colloquia, and social events focused on the accomplishments of alumnae. In a survey conducted last year, many alumnae expressed interest in making presentations on their career paths and the influence of the Studies in Women and Gender program on their lives, their goals, and their personal and professional choices. A gift of $2,500 will support a semester's worth of such activities.
School of Engineering and Applied Science—Women in Science and Engineering Seminar Series: $100–$1,000
Gifts in support of the Women in Science and Engineering Seminar Series will provide travel funds and honoraria for prominent women scientists to visit the University, discuss their work, and interact with women students. The students will learn about potential career paths, network with role models, and make contact with potential mentors in their fields.
