For the past eight years, Wahoos across the country have banded together to celebrate the anniversary of Mr. Jefferson's birth by serving their local communities with a myriad of volunteer projects which we call Cavs Care.
In the spirit of this unique tradition, the UVaClub of Atlanta wants to make April 2009 a volunteer month to remember. These past 5 months in particular have been interesting to say the least. More people than ever before are finding themselves in need in our country and in Atlanta, which is all the more reason for us to be excited and make a difference.
For our cocktail kickoff, all club members are encouraged to bring a book(s) to donate to underprivileged kids. Drink specials include $5 margaritas and mojitos. Every person attending is asked to bring a new or gently read book that will be donated to the American Association of University Women.

A fun work party designed to keep our warehouse spic 'n' span- the volunteer tasks often vary, but always deliver a good time! General needs can include inventory organization, light housekeeping and painting donated tools their signature blue. They are located near Turner Field in a residential area. There are several one way streets and GPS systems and Mapquest often give faulty reads, so please let all know to follow the attached directions. Our warehouse parties are always a lot of fun, but we do get a bit messy so you are advised to wear closed toe shoes and their your grubbies. I always tell volunteers to "dress to un-impress."

We will be participating in the March of Dimes in April. The money we raise helps save premature and sick babies. Premature birth is the #1 cause of newborn death and the biggest threat to babies' health today, and through March for Babies, the March of Dimes is funding important research to find out why premature birth happens and what can be done to prevent it. There's nothing more important than to give every baby a healthy start in life. Encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to raise money and participate this year with the Philly Hoos! Tailgate with friends and family following the event.
Though this is a free event, donations are greatly appreciated.

This will serve two purposes. Our Life Skills program teaches MR/MH deaf individuals skills that help them to lead independent lives. Program participants plan to plant vegetables and flowers, which will help them learn about gardening while providing visible results. The second purpose is, of course, to make the area more attractive.
We will have some tools, but if your folks could bring their own shovels, rakes, gloves, etc. that would be great. We will have garbage bags, water and snacks.

Help serve lunch to the hungry and sometimes homeless. Loaves and Fishes, a ministry of St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church, has served lunch to hungry and often homeless people on Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays since 1968. Since most Washington food programs serve only on weekdays, the program offers a crucial service to its guests, some of whom travel across the city to be able to eat on the weekend. The program serves the Mt. Pleasant community in Washington, D.C. and is supported by a number of churches and volunteer organizations from around the D.C. metro area.

In celebration of Earth Day, come volunteer to help protect our watershed! On Sunday, April 19, join U.Va. Alumni to help clean and Maintain Barcroft Park in Arlington. This is the final event of the Cavs Care service events in April. All supplies will be provided by Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment.
Barcroft Park is at 4200 South Four Mile Run Drive between George Mason Drive and Walter Reed Drive in south Arlington. We will meet at 1:00pm in front of the parking garage. The cleanup starts at the concrete ford behind the baseball field.
Directions by car:
From 395, exit at Shirlington; turn right onto Shirlington Road, then left onto Four Mile Run Drive. The Park is about one mile on the left.
Directions by bicycle:
Barcroft Park is on the W&OD and Four Mile Run bicycle path, between George Mason and Walter Reed Drives. If you are on the W&OD path, cross the street at DMV Drive traffic light and enter the park, going past the tennis courts. If you are on the Four Mile Run path coming from the west, you will enter Barcroft Park at George Mason. Continue along the path (past mile marker 4.5) until you see a turnoff to the left, with a wide bridge crossing the stream. From the east, you will enter Barcroft Park at Walter Reed Drive and the turnoff will be to the right.
*This event will be rescheduled if it rains.

Volunteer opportunity through the UVaClub of Winston-Salem's annual Cavaliers Care Project. Cheers! (through Brenner Children's Hospital) is a toast to children's health to be held at the Old Salem Visitor's Center. This is the third year in a row the UVaClub of Winston-Salem has participated in this event. Last year the club provided more volunteers than any other group. As in years past, volunteers will assist wine and food vendors, and, when their shift is over, they will be able to participate in one of the best charity events of the season. Volunteer participation is crucial, and the money goes to fighting cancer in children.
