Suggested Projects
Successful service projects and events have been held across the country. Here is a sampling of projects from over the years to give you ideas for your club's Cavaliers Care initiative.
"Class challenges" create a fun, competitive atmosphere among volunteers of different graduation years. Consider designating "class captains" for each year or decade to motivate peers and win a trophy or gift certificate.

Event Title: Relay for Life Boston
Location: Gordon Indoor Track, Harvard University
Description: Relay for Life events throughout the country raise money for cancer research. This group formed a team to participate in the walk. Each team had one or more members walking at any give time during the event. There were games, food, music, and fun throughout the night. There were also volunteers who helped staff the event.

Event Title: Read Aloud Delaware
Location: St Michael's School & Nursery Inc
Description: Volunteers read for Read Aloud Delaware to the pre-k classes at St. Michael's School. Read Aloud works to promote literacy by reading to children one-on-one in their earliest stages of development - www.readaloud.com. St. Michael's School and Nursery is a non-profit institution which provides affordable, multicultural, high-quality early childhood education and child care.

Event Title: Thomas Jefferson Park Clean Up
Location: Thomas Jefferson Park
Description: U.Va. alumni, families and friends in the New York City area had their fifth Cavs Care Day at Thomas Jefferson Park in Manhattan! They planted flowers, weeded, and cleaned up this much-loved and well-used community park. They had more than 40 volunteers last year and the folks at Thomas Jefferson Park are always excited to have them back.

Event Title: Connor’s Heroes at The Irish Festival
Location: St Patrick's Church
Description: Alumni and parents volunteered for a 1-2 hour shift at the moon bounce, giant slide, carnival games, children's crafts or face painting. The proceeds from the Kids Zone benefited the efforts of Connor’s Heroes to conquer childhood cancer.

Event Title: Abingdon Daycare Revitalization

Description: In cooperation with the United Way, alumni repainted the stripes in the parking area and planted flowers. Following their service project, they had their traditional potluck lunch with plenty of time to socialize.

Event Title: Kick-off Happy Hour Charity Drive
Location: Clarendon, VA (in the evening)
Description: ‘Hoos collected toys and books for a local shelter. The goal was to foster Thomas Jefferson's ideals of citizenship. Virginia alumni across the nation participated in this volunteerism effort.

Event Title: Virginia Tech For Life Blood Drive
Location: Hudson Grille, LifeSouth Dunwoody Center, LifeSouth Henry County Center Description: ‘Hoos participated in the Virginia Tech For Life Blood Drive to commemorate those lost at VT. Donated blood and enjoyed a snack or beer with fellow Wahoo donors.

Event Title: Privet Pull at Red Mountain Park
Location: Red Mountain Park
Description: At Red Mountain Park, volunteers got a special chance to see what will become a 1,107 acre urban woodland park and cleared out some of the invasive species along trails.

Event Title: Habitat for Humanity of Winter Park/Maitland
Location: Winter Park
Description: Alumni and parents lent their help to Habitat for Humanity of Winter Park/Maitland at their project at the corner of Denning Drive and New England Avenue in Winter Park. They arrived at 8:30 a.m. in working clothes, bringing with them only a hat and work gloves, and pitched in for this worthy cause and were done by noon.

Event Title: Cavaliers Care with the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum
Description: Chicago ‘Hoos volunteered at the Nature Museum for a fun community service project. Some folks worked outside on pulling out invasive species, mulching and clearing in the “prairie,” and up to four people at any one time worked inside the education center, working with visitors on crafts and hanging out with kids in the early childhood zone.

Event Title: Arbor Day Celebration
Location: Huston Lake Park
Description: Alumni and friends helped with an Arbor Day celebration and project, organized by Denver Parks & Recreation at Huston Lake Park (S. Zuni & W. Ohio) in Denver. They planted 150 trees in the park. Denver Parks & Recreation provided materials, tools, and lunch. Participants were asked to dress for any weather possibilities!

Event Title: Food Packaging at the Oregon Food Bank
Location: Portland, OR
Description: The Oregon Food Bank recovers food from farmers, manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, individuals and government sources. It then distributes that food to 20 regional food banks across Oregon. The UVaClub of Oregon volunteered their efforts at the Oregon food Bank, working at bulk food packaging.

Event Title: The Day on the Ride
Location: Golden Gate Park
Description: 'Hoos helped to set up food stations for people who were practicing for "The Day on the Ride" where people biked from San Francisco to Los Angeles to benefit the SF Aids Foundation. Riders did an 80-mile practice ride and returned to Golden Gate Park to get lunch. The group worked with the caterer to help prepare food such as salad and serve food to the riders.

Event Title: Landscaping for Sunstone
Location: The Sunstone Healing Center
Description: The Sunstone Healing Center is a beautiful property where cancer patients are served at low or no cost with a variety of services: yoga and pilates classes, acupuncture, massage, cooking classes, and nutritional services, just to name a few. Our volunteers helped with their outdoor property. They set in a flagstone "path,” lined a walking path with rocks, weeded, trimmed and cleaned up gardens spread wood chips on their walking path and removed dead cacti. Sunstone provided all the tools, water and lunch.
