University of Virginia’s
Women in Leadership Conference

“Making a Difference”

The inaugural Women in Leadership Conference took place at the University of Virginia on September 26 and 27, 2008. Designed to celebrate the achievements of University women and highlight how they are "Making a Difference" within their communities, the conference attracted 150 alumnae, women professors, and students. Attendees shared their experiences and expertise on panel topics including business, the environment, politics, education, sports, health care, and entertainment. The keynote speeches featured Sheila Johnson (UVa. philanthropist and volunteer) and Elizabeth A. Smith (College '85), who shared their thoughts on success in the business world, their service as role models, and their personal and professional contributions locally and globally. The event was co-hosted by Betsy Casteen and Suzan Garson, providing perspective on the contemporary role of the university in promoting the achievements of alumnae, and the vision of a future with even more women in prominent positions of leadership.
