Jefferson Scholars

The goal of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation is to attract to UVa students who possess exceptional talent in leadership, scholarship and citizenship. Merit-based Jefferson Scholarships cover the entire cost of attending UVa (room, board, tuition, and reasonable living expenses) for four years.

Over fifty local alumni participate in the Richmond regional selection process in December and January by interviewing or greeting outstanding high school senior nominees from more than 30 local schools. After two rounds of regional interviews, the Richmond Club selects up to four nominees to be invited to Charlottesville to participate in the Jefferson Scholar National Selection Weekend in March.  These nominees participate in interviews, testing, and competition with other finalists from all over the world

The Jefferson Scholars Committee interviewed 32 students from local high schools in January 2009 and have chosen the following to compete at the Final Selection Weekend in Charlottesville in late March.

  • Hillary Hurd from Maggie L. Walker Governor's School
  • Kelly Lugbill from Douglas Freeman High School
  • Carolyn Pelnik from Henrico High School

Recipients will be announced following the Selection Weekend. Thank you to our 30+ alumni who participated in our regional selection process.
