Martin Luther King Middle School Partnership

The UVaClub of Richmond is partnering with Martin Luther King Middle School in Church Hill as a community partner in a new and exciting venture!  We are currently putting together a committee to plan the next steps including projects such as career-based guest speakers events, updating the locker room, assisting with SOL remediation programs, developing a teacher appreciation week, creating a Mock Court Trial model, sponsoring a writing contest, and hosting an Achievement Dance.  If you would like to help forge the path for this relationship please e-mail kteagno@alumni.virginia.edu to join our the "MLK" committee.

HOKIES vs. HOOS CHALLENGE CONTINUES

Once again, Hokies and 'Hoos battled for bragging rights by donating food and raising money to help the Central Virginia Foodbank. The need for donations has never been greater, as demand for the Foodbank’s services has increased by a staggering 325% over the last year.

This year’s competition ran during the week of the big UVa vs. Tech basketball showdown in Charlottesville on Wednesday, February 18th. Food donations were made at Richmond-area Ukrop’s stores between Monday, February 16th and Saturday, February 21st. Online donations were made between February 14th and February 21st at www.hokiesvshoos.com.

The competition ended at midnight on Saturday, February 21st, and the Hoos were announced as the winner!  The score between the Hokies and 'Hoos was made up of combined donations of money, food, and volunteer time.  It's posted online at www.hokiesvshoos.com. Thanks for helping the Wahoos beat the Hokies as both worked toward feeding the hungry – all in the spirit of a friendly rivalry.

In the fall of 2008, the Richmond 'Hoos wrapped up the FIRST cooperative collegiate build in Habitat History with the Richmond Alumni Chapters of Virginia Tech and UVa teaming up to raise money and assemble volunteers to build a house for Richmond Habitat in the fall of 2008. A deserving family got a new home and both schools' scholarship funds will got a boost as the two universities teamed up to support affordable housing in greater Richmond.
