This is a community club and you have taken the first step in being a part of a vibrant community that is passionate for the University. We invite all friends of UVA to get involved and join us for our upcoming events and programs.
The mission of the UVA Club of Jacksonville is to foster ongoing relationships between the University of Virginia and the local community of alumni and friends of UVA through a series of educational, networking, athletic, charitable and social events.
The club supports the UVA Admissions Office to encourage local high school students to apply for admission to attend the University as their college of choice. On average 6-7 local students enter UVA each year. The UVA Club of Jacksonville sponsors an annual August reception for those area students and their parents, seeking to help support these students early and often. In addition we are a sponsor of the Jefferson Book Awards, who honor local high school students who exemplify Jeffersonian ideals. Throughout the year we also gather for fun social events where our area ‘Hoos can network and enjoy the fellowship of other spirited Wahoos.
- Charitable Involvement
In conjunction with UVA Clubs “Cavaliers Care” initiative, each year our Club selects a charity in the Jacksonville area to support. The UVA Club of Jacksonville partners with West Jacksonville Elementary School spending time in April each year lending a hand around the school. It is a lot of fun and the joy on the kids’ faces makes this a special day.
The UVA Club of Jacksonville no longer has “members” that pay membership dues. Instead, everyone is a member and the Club’s events will be open to all. For those events for which the Club charges a fee to attend or participate, it will be a single price, rather than one price for non-members and a discounted price for members. Instead of paying a membership fee, the Club will instead be seeking donations from its supporters. This change-over will have one major change – the previous “membership fees” will be replaced by (hopefully) your donations, which will be fully tax-deductible.
With your donations, The UVA Club of the Jacksonville is able to award an annual scholarship, as administered and maintained by the Education Committee, in the amount of $1000 to a local student attending UVA as a First Year student in the fall. The scholarship will be presented at our annual student send-off gathering in August.
To apply, the student must submit a 500-word essay on the topic provided. A committee rates the entries according to three criteria: creativity, clarity, and use of the English language.
